Pole Vault Carolina Hosts Maggie Invitational!
DURHAM, N.C. (06/11/2021) — An inspired group of athletes followed in the footsteps of storybook pole-vaulter Maggie Steele at the Maggie Vaults Over the Moon Invitational held at the Pole Vault Carolina facility. It was the first time that an event has been named for the acclaimed track & field story, which has become a cult classic in the sport’s community.
The first 10 athletes who signed up for the event received a free copy of the book written by author Grant Overstake, and a banner of the book’s cover was hung on the wall of the club. It was the first of many Maggie Invitationals coming to vault clubs and camps around the world.
“The Maggie Vaults Over the Moon Invitational was an amazing tribute to Maggie and the positive message of her story,” Overstake said. “A big thank-you to club owners Jose and Adele San Miguel for welcoming me and Maggie into their awesome facility.”
Hailed one of the greatest track and field novels of all time by Citius Mag, the saga of a gritty Kansas farm girl’s quest to master the daring sport of pole-vaulting has stirred the hopes and dreams of readers around the world. The story was reissued as a classroom reader on June 1st, with discussion questions to help students reflect and refocus as they return to school following the pandemic that has disrupted the lives of many.
In addition to the original story by author Grant Overstake, the second edition includes an inspiring foreword by reigning Olympic Pole Vault Champion Katerina Stefanidi, with group discussion questions for young people in hard times by a Language Arts (ELA) Teacher and Mental Performance Consultant with a Doctorate in Sport Psychology, Dr. Melissa White.
Pole Vault Carolina club member Ralph Hardy, a master’s pole-vaulter and English professor who is also an author of acclaimed young adult novels, went sky-high in his praise for Maggie Vaults Over the Moon in a new review published in the June issue of TAKEOFF Magazine.
'I didn't like Maggie Vaults Over the Moon. Reader, I loved It!" writes Hardy, who teaches at North Carolina Central University in Durham.

The author sent a personal note to the competitors at the Maggie Vaults Over the Moon Invitational:
“On behalf of everyone here in Grain Valley, it was great to see so many young people having fun at Maggie's very first named event! The poster looks great in your awesome club. Thank you for including a storybook hero with all of the real life heroes pictured on your wall. You have many phenomenal role models, and great coaches, too.
“We would have loved to have been there in person today. Congratulations to everyone who competed and got to watch this event unfold at Maggie's new southern home. We're all knowing the highest and best for all of you. We'll see you over the moon!”
