Founded in 1988 by the visionary Josephine Pace Brown, ARISE (African-Americans Renewing Interest in Spirituals Ensemble) is a vibrant, multi-generational, and multicultural group devoted to preserving and celebrating African-American spirituals.
With soul-stirring harmonies and deeply moving performances, ARISE breathes life into these powerful songs of struggle and resilience, sharing timeless messages of faith, hope, and unity that transcend generations.
For over three decades, the ARISE Ensemble has been a cornerstone of Wichita’s cultural heritage, captivating audiences across the Midwest with the profound beauty of African-American spirituals.
Their voices have graced prestigious venues, including the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and the gubernatorial inauguration at the Kansas State Capitol, enriching communities through performances and educational programs that honor the enduring legacy of these soulful songs.

Cherrie Dennis Baldon: (Co-Director) A founding member ofthe ARISE Ensemble, Cherrie Dennis Baldon will co-direct the choir on this trip to Paris. Her passion for music and directing makes this trip "an amazing opportunity of a lifetime" for her.
Eddie Peeples: (Co-Director) Eddie Peeples brings deep experience and a commitment to uplifting Black artistry through music.
Prisca Barnes: Dr. Prisca Barnes, whose dedication to literacy and education is evident in her founding of Storytime Village, Inc., will join the ARISE Ensemble in Paris.
Jesse Barnes: Dr. Jesse Barnes, the Executive Director of Grace United Community Ministries, Inc., is also a talented tenor and a valued member of the ARISE Ensemble.
Andy Bias: Longtime ARISE Ensemble bass singer Andy Bias has been a member for an impressive 32 years. His deep bass voice has been instrumental in the choir's rich harmonies and captivating performances.
Brock Booker: Brock Booker, a tenor with seven years in the ARISE Ensemble, will share his dynamic vocals and commitment to the group's message with the world.
Sharon Hill Cranford: Gifted storyteller, soaring soloist and a founding scholar of the ARISE Ensemble, Dr. Cranford brings her powerful voice and passion for history to every performance.
Carey Hesse: A theatrical soprano with 20 years of experience singing with the ARISE Ensemble, Carey brings her dedication to the group's mantra, "Unity through Harmony" to Paris.
Diane Hoheisel: Diane Hoheisel, a soprano/alto, will be making her first trip with the Ensemble, sharing her beautiful voice and enthusiasm for the choir's mission.
Sheila Brown Kinnard: Sheila Brown Kinnard, daughter of the founder, Josephine Brown, will add storytelling and voice to the double octet (16 voices).
Cliff Loesch: Tenor Cliff Loesch, a retired Wichita pastor and music educator, will bring his passion for justice and civil rights to the Arise Ensemble's Paris performance.

Grant Overstake: Bass singer Grant Overstake drew inspiration from his time with ARISE to write The Real Education of TJ Crowley: Coming of Age on the Redline. The novel has been adapted into a full-cast audio drama, which is a finalist for the 2025 Audie Awards, the highest honor in the industry. The drama features music from the ARISE choir, delivering powerful and immersive storytelling.
Aletra Chaney-Profit: Aletra Chaney-Profit, a gifted alto and soprano soloist, has brought her powerful voice to the ARISE Ensemble for six years.

Co-written by ARISE member Grant Overstake, the ensemble’s powerful music elevates this story of racial awakening and reconciliation in 1960s Wichita into an unforgettable experience.

Gerald Norwood: Sharing the Legacy of African-American Spirituals

Led by board president Gerald Norwood, the acclaimed ARISE Ensemble (African-Americans Renewing Interest in Spirituals Ensemble) embarks on a groundbreaking tour to Paris, France.
The trip signifies a pivotal moment for the Wichita-based group, celebrated for its moving performances of African-American spirituals. Norwood, a passionate advocate for preserving and promoting this rich musical heritage, sees the tour as an opportunity to bridge cultures and inspire audiences worldwide.
"ARISE will continually educate our listeners about the historicity of these songs and their powerful messaging of intrigue, inspiration, and optimism in the midst of despair," Norwood stated, emphasizing the ensemble's dedication to sharing the profound stories embedded in each spiritual. "Most importantly, we are dedicated to having fun while continually expanding our audience no matter who, when, or where they may reside".
Norwood's own journey with ARISE has been deeply personal. As a historian and author, he has spent decades researching African American history, tracing his own family's path from slavery to modern-day achievements. This profound understanding of history informs his leadership, infusing ARISE's performances with authenticity and depth.

Cherrie Dennis Baldon Returns to Lead ARISE on Paris Tour
Gifted musician Cherrie Dennis Baldon is poised to elevate the ensemble’s performances in Paris, delivering an inspiring message of resilience, hope, and unity to the City of Lights.
Cherrie Dennis Baldon is returning to the ensemble as co-director for its historic tour to Paris, France. She will lead the double octet in a series of performances at prestigious venues, including the remodeled Notre Dame Cathedral and the U.S. Embassy, sharing the timeless beauty and significance of African-American spirituals with international audiences.
“I am honored that ARISE considered and asked me to serve as co-director for the ensemble during this trip to Paris, France. What a wonderful blessing!” said Baldon. “I love playing, singing, and directing, so I see this as an amazing opportunity of a lifetime to travel abroad doing what the Heavenly Father has gifted me to do.”
Baldon’s career in music ministry spans more than five decades, beginning at the age of twelve when she became an accompanist for her church’s choirs. She has served as the Minister of Music at St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Wichita, Kansas, for over 20 years and has been a passionate educator, teaching vocal music at Wichita schools such as Edison Ingalls Elementary Academy and Jardine Middle School. Her contributions extend beyond the classroom, including founding the S.T.E.P.S. Gospel Piano Lab, mentoring aspiring gospel pianists, and establishing Voice of One publishing company, which has released numerous original gospel plays and songs.
Baldon is also a dedicated advocate for her community, participating in events such as the Wichita Black Arts Festival and Juneteenth celebrations. She founded the Voices of Character, a performing youth group that showcases local talent and fosters cultural pride.
One of Baldon’s original compositions, "One Nation, One Dream" has become an audience favorite and will be performed in Paris with soloist Prisca Barnes. This powerful song embodies the ensemble's message of unity and hope, resonating with audiences worldwide.
Eddie Peeples: Co-Director of the ARISE Ensemble
Edward James “Eddie” Peeples, an accomplished musician, minister, and educator, serves as co-director and pianist for the ARISE Ensemble. As the ensemble embarks on a historic tour to Paris, Peeples’ exceptional talent, deep community roots, and passion for music will be central to delivering their powerful message of hope, resilience, and unity.

For the ARISE Paris tour, Peeples will play a key role as co-director, pianist, and griot, offering historical context for African American spirituals and leading master classes to connect French audiences with this powerful musical tradition.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, to Deacon Edward and Henrietta E. Peeples, Eddie’s journey into music began in Willingboro, New Jersey, where his parents purchased a piano when he was 13. Within a year, he became the musician for the youth choir at Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and other churches in South Jersey and Philadelphia. His early achievements earned him numerous high school awards in jazz and gospel choir performance.
Eddie continued his musical path at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, where he served as Campus Chapel pianist and music director for the Benedict College Gospel Choir. He expanded his leadership by serving as Minister of Music at Family Worship Center COGIC and Zion Cannon Baptist Church, as well as Assistant Worship and Arts Director at Bible Way Church of Atlas Road. His passion for education was evident in his 17 years of teaching music at Benedict College’s Child Development Center, Irmo High School, and St. Martin de Porres Catholic School.
Since moving to Wichita a decade ago, Peeples has left a significant mark on the community. He currently serves as Director of Worship and Arts and Associate Minister at Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church. As the founder of E2MUSIC Group, he provides music consultation and lessons for all ages. An accomplished recording artist, Peeples has produced two albums, A Christmas Tribute and Eddie Peeples: Sing a Song, and has accompanied celebrated gospel artists such as Mary Mary, Kim Burrell, and Jonathan Nelson.
A proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Peeples takes his greatest pride in his family, including his four children: Edward J. II (Jay), Dirk Jonathan, Chaney Christian, and Jaren David Peeples. His dedication to faith, education, and the arts continues to inspire communities, making him an indispensable part of ARISE’s groundbreaking journey to Paris.

Prisca Barnes, Ph.D., a dedicated alto soloist with the ARISE Ensemble and a passionate advocate for children’s literacy, is set to embark on a transformative journey to Paris with the acclaimed Wichita-based choir.
Prisca Barnes, founder and CEO of Storytime Village, inspires a love of reading for Kansas children through innovative programs like the PBS Kansas show promoting early literacy. Her work celebrates education, storytelling, fostering a love of reading in the next generation.
The tour, marking a significant milestone for ARISE, will showcase the power of African American spirituals on an international stage. Barnes will be performing the solo for "One Nation, One Dream," a song that embodies the spirit of unity and hope that ARISE champions.
A Voice for Literacy and Community
Beyond her musical talents, Barnes is renowned for her commitment to fostering a love of reading among underserved children. As the founder and CEO of Storytime Village, a Kansas-based non-profit organization, she has dedicated her career to empowering young minds through literacy. Storytime Village’s mission is to inspire a lifelong passion for reading in children from birth to age eight, recognizing that literacy is the key to unlocking opportunities and creating brighter futures.
Since its inception in 2009, Storytime Village has impacted over 25,000 children and families, distributing nearly 20,000 books to those in need. Through innovative programs like RISE (a family literacy program), the Literacy Champions high school leadership program, and the LEAP summer camp, Barnes and her team have worked tirelessly to close the literacy gap and create a more equitable society.
A Family United Through Music and Service
Joining Barnes on the Paris tour is her brother, Dr. Jesse Barnes, a tenor vocalist with a deep history in community service and music education. Their shared passion for music and their dedication to serving others exemplifies the spirit of unity and purpose that defines the ARISE Ensemble.

“Through being a part of ARISE, I gained a strong insight into the power of music in the African American experience,” Barnes said. “It is a priceless experience because it incorporates the sound and texture of music, the challenges and triumphs in the American experience told through music, and history incorporated into a diverse group of men and women.”
The ARISE Ensemble’s Paris performances will offer audiences an immersive experience of African-American spirituals, a genre that served as a source of strength and hope during the era of slavery. Under the co-direction of founding member Cherrie Dennis Baldon, the ensemble will present a series of concerts celebrating the rich tradition of these spirituals.
One of the tour’s highlights is a performance at the newly restored Notre Dame Cathedral, five years after a catastrophic fire. The cathedral’s transformation reveals radiant, newly exposed stone, gleaming marble floors, and restored stained-glass windows that embody its historic craftsmanship.
Barnes’s participation in this tour underscores the power of music to transcend cultural boundaries and inspire unity. His dedication to education and community service, paired with his passion for music, embodies the spirit of the ARISE Ensemble.
Former County Commissioner, Developer Andy Bias to Perform in Paris
Longtime ARISE Ensemble bass singer Andy Bias will join the internationally acclaimed choir in Paris, France, as part of the Black History Month celebration. The trip marks a significant milestone for Bias and the Ensemble, known for their powerful performances of African American spirituals.
Bass singer Andy Bias has added depth and energy to ARISE Ensemble for 32 years.
Bias, a Wichita native and prominent community figure, has been a dedicated member of ARISE for 32 years. His deep bass voice has been instrumental in the choir's rich harmonies and captivating performances that have moved audiences worldwide.
"This trip to Paris is an unreal opportunity," Bias said. "We were blessed a couple of years ago to perform at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., a bucket list item that one could only dream about. This is right up there with that—to travel to another country and share our gifts is an awesome honor. All praises to God!"
Bias’s journey with ARISE began in 1993 when the choir’s founder, Josephine Brown, heard him singing at a funeral mass. Brown, a champion for racial integration and equality, recognized his talent and invited him to join the ensemble. "It has been a tremendous journey," said Bias, who feels "very blessed and extremely humbled to have lasted this long with so many extremely talented people."

About Andy Bias
Andy Bias is a real estate developer and rental property manager in Wichita, Kansas. He is a former president of Mennonite Housing, a nonprofit organization providing affordable housing and repair services for low to moderate-income individuals. Bias also served as a Sedgwick County commissioner and is a graduate of Wichita State University. He is an active member of Holy Savior Catholic Church, where he also sings in the choir.
Community Leader Brock Booker Joins ARISE Ensemble for Historic Paris Performance
Brock Booker, a dynamic tenor and community leader, will join the acclaimed ARISE Ensemble for a historic performance tour in Paris, France. The trip is a major milestone for the Wichita-based group, renowned for its captivating performances of African-American spirituals.
Brock Booker, tenor, brings his joy of singing to the ARISE Ensemble.
Booker, a tenor with ARISE for seven years, brings extensive musical experience to the ensemble. A proud alumnus of the Friends University Singing Quakers, he occasionally leads his own jazz combo, showcasing his versatility as a performer. He has embraced the opportunity to harmonize with ARISE, travel, and share the group’s message of unity and hope.
Beyond music, Booker is deeply committed to community service. He serves on various city and advisory boards and is actively engaged in local and state politics. Currently a certified medication aide, Booker is considering nursing school as his next career step.
Eager to help spread ARISE’s message of unity through harmony, Booker will join the ensemble in inspiring and uplifting audiences in Paris.
“I am thrilled to help spread ARISE’s message of unity through harmony across the seas, inspiring and uplifting audiences on another continent for the common good,” he said.

ARISE Founding Scholar Dr. Sharon Hill Cranford Leads Choir to Paris
Sharon Hill Cranford, Ph.D., Founding Scholar of the internationally acclaimed ARISE Ensemble, will lead the choir to Paris, France, as they embark on a cultural exchange program in February. Cranford has been instrumental in organizing the trip, a significant milestone for the Ensemble, known for their powerful performances of African-American spirituals.
Paris audiences will thrill to the soaring soprano voice and compelling storytelling of ARISE founding scholar Dr. Sharon Cranford.
Noted author, film producer, and former college professor, Cranford has been a dedicated member of ARISE since its inception 36 years ago. Her contributions to the choir extend far beyond singing; she played a pivotal role in shaping its mission and identity. She gave the ensemble its name, African-Americans Renewing Interest in Spirituals Ensemble (ARISE), to honor the creators of this powerful musical tradition.
"Being a part of ARISE, a multicultural group, has meant making a difference in the world. I am honored to have been asked to help bridge the gap between cultures through spirituals. To see the organization grow, flourish, and impact lives over the years has richly blessed my life," Cranford said.
Cranford is dedicated to promoting cultural awareness and appreciation. Her acclaimed memoir, Kinship Concealed: Amish Mennonite–African American Connections, co-written with Dwight E. Roth, explores their discovery as distant blood relatives—one African American, the other Anglo American. Their ancestors, Amish brothers, followed very different paths: one became a leading Amish bishop in Pennsylvania, while the other embraced Southern culture in North Carolina, including slavery
Sharon also is the founder and CEO of FAM, Inc., a nonprofit organization that produces short documentary films highlighting diverse cultures and perspectives.
Reflecting on the honor of performing abroad during Black History Month, Cranford emphasized the importance of spreading their message on a global stage.
“Being a catalyst in helping Paris, France, to celebrate Black History Month is a dream come true,” she said. “It may sound cliché, but the world needs our message of hope, resilience, and unity. ARISE exemplifies unity within its own ranks; if anyone can teach about the power of love and togetherness, it is one who has demonstrated it."

Sharon Hill Cranford, Ph.D., is a retired business owner, college professor, author, filmmaker, and community leader. She is the Founding Scholar of the ARISE Ensemble, founder and CEO of FAM, Inc., and a passionate advocate for cultural awareness and appreciation. Cranford resides in Cedar Hill, Texas.
Carey Hesse to Bring Wichita’s ARISE Ensemble to Life on Paris Stage
Carey Hesse, a soprano with the celebrated ARISE Ensemble, is set to join the choir for a historic performance in Paris, France.
Carey Hesse, longtime soprano with the ARISE Ensemble, shares a moment with founder Josephine "Mama Jo" Brown, whose vision and leadership have guided the group’s mission of preserving and sharing African-American spirituals for nearly four decades.
Hesse, a registered nurse with a background in musical theater, has been an integral member of ARISE for two decades. Her deep appreciation for the ensemble’s message of unity and her dedication to artistic expression make her a valued representative of the choir's mission on this international platform.
A Passion for Music and Community
Hesse’s journey with ARISE began through a serendipitous encounter with Josephine "Mama Jo" Brown, the ensemble’s founder, following a musical theater performance. Recognizing Hesse’s talent, Brown invited her to join ARISE, sparking a lifelong connection to the power and beauty of spirituals.
“Being a member of ARISE has been a joy and honor for me,” Hesse said. “We have shared much over the years—our histories, heartaches, joys, cultural views and insights, outreach art programs, and hopes for the future.”
Over the years, Hesse has witnessed ARISE’s growth and influence, performing alongside fellow members at prestigious venues, including The Kennedy Center and in collaborations with Music Theatre of Wichita and the Wichita Symphony.
Paris: A Stage for Sharing Cultural Heritage

New ARISE Ensemble Member Diane Hoheisel Ready to Perform in Paris
Diane Hoheisel, one of the newest members of the ARISE Ensemble, is preparing for the experience of a lifetime as she joins the choir in Paris, France. Having only joined the internationally acclaimed group in July 2024, the trip marks an incredible milestone in her journey with the ensemble.

“I drove an existing member to rehearsal, sat in with the group, came back for the next rehearsal, and the rest is history,” Hoheisel said.
The ARISE Ensemble is known for its powerful performances of African-American spirituals. Hoheisel remembers being captivated the first time she heard them sing.
“I remember the first time I heard ARISE sing—wow! It gave me goosebumps and raised my spirit. All the emotions—sadness, pain, joy, hope, and pride,” she said.
For Hoheisel, the Paris trip reflects the unifying power of music and the deep connection she feels with the ensemble’s mission.
“Music brings people together in all circumstances and in all walks of life. The reactions and feelings invoked by an ARISE performance are profound. I’ve experienced it as a patron and now as a member. To be able to spread that across continents is incredible! I am blessed and honored to be part of this group so rich with history,” Hoheisel said.

As the daughter of ARISE founder Josephine Pace Brown, Kinnard carries her family's mission of unity, resilience, and cultural heritage to audiences worldwide.
Kinnard, a founding member of ARISE, has been part of the ensemble since its inception in 1988. Her connection to ARISE is deeply personal—her mother, Josephine Pace Brown, affectionately known as “Mama Jo,” founded the ensemble to preserve and celebrate the rich heritage of African-American spirituals.
“ARISE has always been more than a choir—it’s a bridge connecting generations and cultures through music,” Kinnard said. “Being part of something my mother envisioned and nurtured is a profound honor, and I carry her legacy with me every time we perform.”
Kinnard’s family has a long history of social justice and community advocacy in Wichita. Her mother, the first Black woman elected to the Wichita Board of Education, was a trailblazer in the fight for racial equality. Her father, Dr. Val Brown Sr., was Wichita’s first Black doctor with admitting privileges, breaking racial barriers in the medical field.
“Music has always been a force for change and healing in my family,” Kinnard said. “Through ARISE, we’re continuing that legacy—spreading messages of hope and equality wherever we go.”

Former Wichita Pastor and Music Educator Cliff Loesch to Perform with ARISE Ensemble in Paris
Cliff Loesch, a former Friends Church pastor and music educator at Gordon Parks Academy, will join the internationally acclaimed ARISE Ensemble in Paris, France, as part of a cultural exchange program this February. A tenor with ARISE since 2020, Loesch has become an integral part of the choir’s powerful performances of African-American spirituals.
Cliff Loesh brings musicial artistry and a passion for social justice to ARISE.
Loesch’s journey to ARISE was shaped by his commitment to social justice and a desire to build bridges across racial divides.
“I was deeply disturbed by the news reports of the killing of Trayvon Martin in 2012, and then by the deaths of Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, and Eric Garner in 2014. I decided that trying to build more bridges in my life was important,” Loesch said.
After a 32-year career as a pastor, including 25 years at University Friends Church, Loesch returned to his musical roots. He renewed his teaching license and was hired to teach band and elementary music at Gordon Parks Academy. It was there that his colleague, LaTonia Kennedy, recognized his talent and passion for community and encouraged him to join ARISE.
“I am constantly amazed by the depth of talent and musicianship in ARISE,” Loesch said. “There are so many amazing singers in this group. It is a joy to sing with ARISE, to make such beautiful music, and to share the powerful messages we convey through song. I also deeply appreciate the friendships I have made through ARISE.”
The Paris performance represents a unique opportunity for Loesch to share his musical talents and ARISE’s mission of unity and cultural preservation.
“I have wanted to go to Paris for a long time. I am glad this opportunity came along!” Loesch said.

Soprano Karléah Murry to Embark on Historic Paris Performance
Karléah Murry, a talented soprano/alto with the renowned ARISE Ensemble, will join the choir for a historic performance tour in Paris, France.
Murry, a dedicated member of ARISE for eight years, and the daughter of alto Shirley Murry, first connected with the ensemble after hearing them perform at an after-school event at a Wichita Public Schools elementary school. She was immediately inspired by the choir’s ability to convey deep emotion and history through music. Shortly after, she was invited to a Saturday rehearsal and found herself immersed in ARISE's mission. "The rest is history," she said with a smile.
"In my opinion, it is always a good thing to sing great music with talented singers," Murry shared. "It is especially blessed to do so and keep such a significant part of U.S. American history alive."

Murry has been a valued member of ARISE for eight years, bringing her passion for music and her commitment to sharing the cultural legacy of African-American spirituals to every performance. Her journey with the ensemble began with an invitation from Shawn Chastain, the current director.
“I love to sing, and to sing with this caliber of performers has been amazing,” Murry said. “We’ve sung at local schools, venues around Wichita, in other states, and even participated in a Memorial Day event in Washington, D.C. It’s been such an exciting ride!”

For Murry, the Paris tour is both a personal and cultural highlight. “I’ve lived in and visited several European countries but have never been to France,” she shared. “I am so looking forward to seeing the iconic sights. Oberg, a seasoned museum professional and retired public school administrator, has been a devoted member of ARISE for eight years. Born in Minnesota, Oberg’s passion for music began in childhood, singing in school, church, and community choirs.
“Music has always been a powerful form of expression for me,” Oberg said. “It’s a way to connect with others, share stories, and celebrate our shared humanity.”
Oberg’s professional journey reflects his commitment to education and cultural exchange. He earned a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Minnesota and an M.A. in Anthropology and Museology from the University of Washington. His work included serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in El Salvador and Costa Rica and holding leadership roles in museums across the United States, including the Science Museum of Minnesota and the McCormick School Museum in Wichita.
“Through my work in museums and education, I’ve always sought to foster understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures,” Oberg said. “Joining ARISE has allowed me to continue that mission through the universal language of music.”

Josephine “Mama Jo” Brown, the founder of ARISE, invited Overstake and her husband, Grant, to join the choir after hearing them sing at the Unity of Wichita congregation. Grant, an author and creator of the award-winning audio drama The Real Education of T.J. Crowley: Coming of Age on the Redline, performs alongside Claire in the choir. Together, they bring their shared passion for music and storytelling to the group.
“Getting to sing in beautiful, iconic places I’ve never seen before, with their incredible sanctuaries and acoustics—and sharing the experience with Grant—is what excites me most about going to Paris with ARISE,” Claire said.

Overstake’s commitment to education is as impressive as her dedication to music. After retiring in 2020 from USD 259 following a distinguished 39-year teaching career, she joined the faculty at The Independent School, where she teaches 5th and 6th-grade science in her interactive “O-Zone” classroom. Known affectionately by students as “Mrs. O,” Overstake has received numerous accolades, including the National Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science in 2010.
Her leadership extends beyond the classroom, as she has held numerous roles in professional organizations, school committees, and community initiatives. Her impact has been felt not only in Wichita but across the broader educational landscape.
