WSU Campers Earn 'Maggie Awards' from Shocker Track Club
With clear skies, scorching heat, and a blast furnace for a tailwind, conditions were almost perfect for the gutsy athletes who attended the second Shocker Pole Vault Camp of the summer, July 12-14, at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.Instead of being a negative, the 100-degree temps simply provided more fuel for this hot group of vaulters. Many of them set new personal records at the camp, thanks to expert instruction from Shocker Pole Vault Coach, Pat Wilson, and his current and former collegiate vaulters. As a reward for their hard work, campers received a copy of the inspiring sports novel, Maggie Vaults Over the Moon, which captures the heroic journey of a fictional Kansas farm girl who overcomes hardship and soars to new heights as a pole-vaulter.The book was presented by Wichita-based author Grant Overstake as a motivational gift from the Shocker Track Club (STC), a nonprofit organization which provides track coaching to youth, elite and masters athletes, and supports the WSU track and cross-country programs.
Under Coach Wilson's direction, Wichita State Track and Field has developed one of the most successful pole-vaulting programs in the Midwest. Over the past few seasons, he has coached Shocker vaulters to five all-conference performances and one individual Missouri Valley Conference title. Wilson himself was an All-MVC vaulter for the Shockers and a member of the 1994 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championship team.To learn more about Shocker pole-vaulting and the historic pole-vault venue of Cessna Stadium click here.Order Maggie at Watermark BooksFrom now through August, Overstake has pledged to make a donation to the Kansas High School Activities Association Sports Hall of Fame for each copy of Maggie sold at the Watermark store, located at Douglas and Oliver in Wichita, or via the Watermark website.
