Fly High and Win Big: ‘Maggie’ Awaits Top Vaulters in Paradise!

KEY WEST, FLORIDA — Calling all pole vaulters! 🌟 At Pole Vault in Paradise on January 4, 2025, the rewards for soaring to new heights go beyond the prize money. Top finishers in the open divisions will also receive a copy of the inspiring novel Maggie Vaults Over the Moon by Grant Overstake!

What Makes This Event Shine?

In addition to his tireless duties as event organizer, Key West Track Club Coach Steve Hanes, 68, took his turns on the runway himself at last year’s event, vaulting 2.95m (4.95 age graded) and exceeding the All-American Master’s Standard in his age group. (Photo by Rob D’Avellar).

This is not your average pole-vaulting meet. The tropical vibes of Key West in January, with 75-degree weather and energizing ocean breezes, create a dream-like atmosphere. Competitors will have the unique opportunity to test their limits on fast runways, aided by tailwinds averaging 10–15 mph, making this event a potential PR moment!

Beyond the perfect conditions, the event is star-studded with appearances by Olympians Billy Olson, Doug Lytle, and masters champion Paul Babits, who will share their wisdom and cheer on vaulters.

Proceeds from this event support high school track and field programs in the Lower Keys, with the Key West Track & Field Club, Inc. raising over $60,000 since 2019.

Incentives That Elevate the Stakes

Top finishers in the open divisions will be awarded cash prizes:

1st Place: $1,500
2nd Place: $1,000
3rd Place: $500

Plus, a jaw-dropping $5,000 prize pool awaits athletes who break the island records (5.72m for men, 4.57m for women).

Olympians Katerina Stefanidi and Anicka Newell shared a radiant moment with Maggie after top finishes at last year’s event. The novel includes a foreword by Stefanidi herself. (Photo by Rob D’Avellar).

The Spirit of Maggie Vaults Over the Moon

The event also celebrates resilience and inspiration through Grant Overstake’s acclaimed YA novel, Maggie Vaults Over the Moon. This uplifting tale of Maggie Steele, a Kansas farm girl who overcomes adversity through pole vaulting, resonates deeply within the pole-vaulting community.

All top finishers will receive a copy of the novel, which has been endorsed by Olympians and educators as a must-read for athletes and dreamers alike. Maggie’s indomitable spirit will be there in full force as athletes gather to reach for the sky.
